It would work exactly like either of these two projects but would work on Linux (at least Ubuntu)

It would be great, very great, if this could be modelled on Autohotkey for Windows. Check out http://www.autohotkey.com/ I’d be glad to pledge some money for such a project.
Does this one fit the bill? Has anyone tried it, does it work with Gnome?
GEdit has a snippets plugin which I think you might find useful…
