NamespaceNews extension for MediaWiki
idea by Eloquence
Extension that generates category RSS feeds for all articles posted within a specific namespace.
Project progress
The project has not yet started development, because it is waiting for quotes.
There no developers quoting to develop this project.
Project details
This functionality should be implemented as an extension to the development version of MediaWiki (SVN trunk).
The end result should be that I can get RSS feeds for the newest pages posted to any category in a given namespace. The feeds should contain the HTML of the first (n) paragraphs and the first image of the articles.
As noted, it should be possible to filter by a single category, or to retrieve a feed for all pages. Category intersection features would be a bonus, but are not required.
In order to achieve quality control, it must be possible to configure the feed so that only changes by a specified usergroup will be pushed into it (e.g. only registered users, only sysops).
The extension should support rendering any of the generated feeds inline.
This extension will be very valuable to Wikinews, but will also simplify the management of community news sources like the Wikipedia Signpost.

I don’t use Wikinews, but this sounds like a really good idea, and it’s a really well-specific project idea. Good going.
The RSS feeds per category is sort of like what we’ve done for microPledge. For instance, the feed of new projects tagged rss and wiki (only your project with both of these tags right now):
http://micropledge.com/rss/tags/rss+wiki
I tried making something like this using Yahoo Pipes but it really didn’t work well, so an actual feature in MediaWiki for it would be great.
